Introduction
I'm concluding my sixteenth year teaching elementary ESL in Henderson County Public Schools. Since I majored in Spanish, I'm also certified to teach Spanish K-12, but I've only ever taught ESL, starting as a volunteer teaching Central American refugees in Washington DC. Perhaps the most unusual place I've taught is a tobacco barn in Willow Springs, NC.
My newest educational challenge is serving as a SIOP specialist for my district where I will assist teachers implementing the SIOP method with English Language Learners (ELLs). My goal is to eventually complete my doctorate and work in teacher development, preparing teachers to instruct ELLs.
I am a native North Carolinian and "proud to be a Demon Deacon". Currently, I live in the apple orchards of Henderson County, although my heart will always be in the Piedmont. Still, mountain living ain't bad, even if we have been sorely lacking in snow in recent years! I have two beautiful boys (actually six if you count my husband, my fat cat, and my two dogs). My 5th grader and my 7th grader have made me a Scout mom, a soccer mom, and halfway crazy! When I'm not doing "teacher stuff" and "mom stuff", I like to read, dream of having the perfect "Better Homes and Garden" house and yard, prowl through antique stores, hike, and travel. As a Spanish speaker, I've mostly travelled to Latin America (Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras). My husband is a native of Guanajuato, Mexico, so we visit there every other summer. I'm super-excited about visiting another part of the world this summer!
