The Great Kate Wait is over and England has a new prince! Yay! To celebrate (although we would have gone no matter what), our band of fearless explorers hopped on the bus to the beautiful town of Winchester. Missing are Rachel and Laura who decided to brave London and Buckingham Palace to celebrate royal baby
no-name.
On the bus, we put our new poetry skills to use as Jill and Stephanie started a fun game of 10 second collaborative poetry. The rules: you have 10 seconds to write down the next line of the poem. The book is passed around to everybody on the bus and you have to quickly think of something that fits the theme. The theme: Things I Do Not Know.
What We Don’t Know
What color a triceratops was
The name of the royal prince
The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow
The square root of Pi
If I were an octopus, life would be great
The inside jokes about slaps and Fanta orange soda
What the royal family does
How did fanny packs become so popular?
Where did all the cowboys go?
How many pence are in a pound?
What the royal baby’s name is
How much wood a wood chuck chucks
I don’t know if the baby is a boy or a girl
I don’t know Russian
Why did the chicken cross the road?
Why people do what they do
Why I’m here
What’s my purpose
Diddly squat
Sadly I don’t know what I don’t know
I don’t know how to drive on the right side of the road.
Who does that?
A truly great piece of poetry. Once we got to Winchester, we were let loose on the unsuspecting town. We split into groups and explored the town at our own pace, our interest dictating what we wanted to see. There was something for everybody in Winchester--history, shopping, book shops, and pubs. We had conversations with people who live in Winchester and got ideas about what and where were some of the "must dos." Some of these fun things included:
-A trip to the visitor center for information and fun souvenirs
-The ruins of Winchester castle, the Great Hall, and the Round Table
-Winchester cathedral
-Winchester cathedral also provided a cultural experience as some of us got to
hear live opera music--including a rendition of “Memory” from Cats
- Jane Austen's grave
-The Winchester Bible
-A used book shop
-A crypt (for the creepy)
-Ruins of the Wolvesey Castle
-The Mill and the water passage that ran it
-Military Museum
-Winchester Museum
-St. Catherine's Hill
-A non-pub restaurant that served food on slate plates
A little fall of rain led many inside to some pubs and the bus arrived promptly at 4:00 to pick us up. Our adventurers excitedly got on the bus to share their stories with each other and to head back to Guildford to tackle laundry and homework.
