Elizabeth McRainey
I am a second grade teacher at Forest View Elementary in Durham. I received my B.A. in Elementary Education from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006. My second graders fascinate me because they ask so many questions that adults tend to overlook and they bring so much creativity to the table. Our school has a large international population and I love watching my students learn from each other. In the next few years, I would like to obtain English as a Second Language licensure.
I've grown to love Durham over the past 7 years. I especially enjoy spending time at the farmer's market, checking out all of the amazing local restaurants, and exploring the trails in the Duke Forest. I also like to bake, read, and throw the occasional dinner party.
The only place I've been to outside the U.S. is Guatemala. I went with a group of teachers in 2009 to visit schools, live with families, and learn Spanish. It was the most beautiful place I've ever been. I have a penchant for British literature and television, so I am very grateful for the opportunity to go to England and see the places I've only been able to imagine.

The History of Chawton House
The Quiet, Awkward Taxi Ride to Highclere Castle
Postcard Home: Wolvesey Castle, Winchester (Acrostic Poem)
Within Winchester’s walls of glinting flint
Old palace rooms play host to nature
Lingering in the loneliness, longing for the lost
Verdant grass the only carpet
Enfolding guests in quiet reverie
Saxon stronghold, rustic ruin
Ephemeral and yet eternal
You whisper of your past.
Postcard Home: St. Margaret's Church, London (Inverted Sentence)
Along the bustling London street, in the shadow of Westminster Abbey, chimes the carillon of St. Margaret’s Church.
A Day in the Life: Wisley Gardens
Lush green expanse freckled with flowers
Admiring, lingering, frolicking
Notes of jasmine, hyacinth, and rose
Like walking into a Monet painting
Sipping cool elderflower lemonade
Gravel paths, frothy fountains, families of ducks
Gliding my fingers along smooth elephant ears
Refreshment for my soul
A quiet refuge in the midst of busyness
Sultry, serene, lovely.
